the Black Thorn - Fixed Tactical Knife
Crafted by Andy Davis, the Black Thorn is a custom hand forged blade composed of 88 layers of L6 and 1075 high carbon steel. The pattern was manipulated so that it has a cutting edge of extremely dense layering while the flats have a wider more expressive pattern giving a dynamic and dramatic pattern. On the base of the handle and on the spine you can see the composition of how this blade was forged to achieve this technique. The handle is crafted from Brazilian Blackwood which has been sealed before oxidation has occurred so that it will retain the bright orange and browns that is characteristic of Brazilian lumber. Three steel pins attach the handle to the full tang for a functional and durable grip construction. The handle slabs have been ground prior to assembly to expose the edges of the tang, and the pattern on the handle. The inspiration behind this knife comes from an Irish punk rock band called Flatfoot 56 who's most recent release is titled "Black Thorn". they are aggressive, gritty, upbeat, and relentless. I wanted to capture the sound of their music in the details of this piece visually.
